With cheerful smiles and Santa hats, University of Florida students from the Music Education program and Club MUB went caroling last Thursday evening at the local senior living communities of HarborChase and The Village. They sang acapella versions of holiday favorites, like “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” to residents enjoying their evening meals.
“The students brought so much joy,” expressed Dr. Russell Robinson, who participated in this year’s caroling event as professor emeritus. Dr. Robinson began the annual event four years ago as a way to help brighten local senior living communities during the holidays.
It is a great experience for both the students and residents explained Dr. Robinson. The students practice improvisation and singing-by-ear while residents connect with beloved carols and even join in singing-along.
This year, sixteen UF student volunteers, organized by assistant professors Dr. Marshall Haning and Dr. Megan Sheridan, joined Dr. Robinson in spreading cheer during the holiday season.
