- Description
Join us Friday, January 31, 6-9PM for the opening reception of "Coming Home," a group exhibition featuring works by Alicia Steffy, Angelina Rubalcava, Isabella Gialluca, Jackson Domenico, Kayla Rukab, Lauryn Tyler, Leia Ciociola, Lily Goldberg, Lucy de Greling, Noah Vallery, and Valerie Luciow.
"Coming Home" (2025) is a group exhibition comprised of mixed media works by twelve artists living in Gainesville, FL that reminisce on community, relationships, and family dynamics. The domestic environment created by furniture and placement of artwork in the gallery creates a welcoming space similar to the comfort of a family home; moving through the show should feel similar to the intimacy of walking into someone’s private life. Vallery’s Father/Daughter (2024) even uses a wooden furniture fragment as the canvas for her oil painted images.
Interactive pieces such as Goldberg and Ciociola’s mixed media recipe book, in combination with the seating arrangement of the gallery, encourage viewers to sit down and take their time with the artworks, as one might look through old photographs with their loved ones. The shared experiences conveyed through the art pieces are common grounds for individual patrons and artists alike to connect with each other.
Artists were encouraged to submit pieces that encapsulated the feeling of home, which resulted in a wide range of mediums including textiles, ceramics, prints, and paintings. Many artists are working with interdisciplinary processes such as Steffy who uses print, embroidery, and image transfer techniques to create her sentimental series of textiles. Tyler employs the unusual medium of human hair to tell a story about them and their sister’s childhood growing up in the South.
The show welcomes unique works that embody diverse perspectives on the theme. Acrylic and oil paintings by Gialluca and Luciow are inspired by joyful memories of family members. In contrast, de Greling’s shelving unit alludes to more complicated relationships with relatives, and Rukab’s Missing Piece (2024) ruminates on shaping her identity while considering the complexities of her family history. Artists in the exhibition also focus on building community outside of their immediate family such as Domenico’s ceramic lamp; works such as Rubalcava’s Memorial and Celebration Vessel (2024) seek out a stronger bond with the artist’s culture.
The feeling of home is different for every person, ranging from intimate and reverent to fragmented and conflicted, as represented by the diverse collection displayed in the gallery.
Refreshments will be provided at the opening reception. This exhibition will be open for viewing through February 10, 2025 - Links
